As residents of a northeast mobile home park face their uncertain future, one of the country’s most beloved trailer park residents has thrown his support behind them.
Mike Smith, who plays Bubbles on the television show ‘Trailer Park Boys’ has tweeted a message to Calgary’s mayor asking for city officials to reconsider the destruction of the mobile home park situated along the north side of 16 Avenue Northeast just west of the Deerfoot Trail interchange.
In the April 13 tweet to Mayor Naheed Nenshi, Smith said:
@nenshi Pls stop destroying homes and lives in Midfield Park #yyc Trailer parks need to look out for one another! RT to support @mmhpfb

In 2014, officials announced the city owned park, in the 900 block of 16 Ave. N.E., would close in September of 2017. The decision was prompted by aging infrastructure which has reached the end of its life cycle. The water and sewer lines in the park are more than 40 years old,
The city has offered the 173 homeowners $10,000 each to fund the relocation of their units to another park, but residents say there are no vacant lots in Calgary large enough to accommodate their homes.
While unmoved trailers will face the wrecking ball after the city’s imposed deadline, a number of Midfield members vow to stay in their homes at their current site.
An online petition asking the city to improve the current relocation plan received a boost of attention following Smith’s Twitter endorsement, a show of support which struck a chord in Midfield.
“I just sat back and then tears,” recalls Cindy Macdonald from her Midfield home. “I came out and told my husband ‘You'll never guess what!’. I was just so blown away.”
Mayor Nenshi did not reply to Smith’s Tweet but says he is fully aware of Calgary’s current space constraints and the struggles in relocating the Midfield Mobile Home Park homes. The mayor says there is more the city can do to ensure the displaced residents will receive adequate housing but the decision to close the mobile home park will not be reversed.
