The Calgary Homeless Foundation (CHF) says more than 2,200 Calgarians visited a warming centre during the 2023-24 cold weather season, amounting to more than 25,000 visits.

There are five centres, including one at Journey Church, which provide warmth, meals and resources for people experiencing homelessness.

The CHF says no one is immune to life’s unexpected difficulties, such as losing a job, an extra bill, family conflicts, domestic violence, trauma or abuse.

Facing overwhelming challenges, a man identified only as Mason arrived at the Journey Church warming centre in November 2023.

“When he entered the warming centre, he found more than just a safe place; he discovered a community that offered him genuine care and support,” said the CHF in a news release.

“The team at the warming centre assisted him in applying for income support through the (Government of Alberta), helping to stabilize his living situation.

“They also provided essential supplies, including bedding and luggage.”

Currently, Mason works full-time and regularly volunteers at Journey Church and runs his own cleaning company.

CHF defines the cold-weather season in Calgary as November to the end of March.
