A new hotel is in the works for Calgary’s Beltline and officials say the mixed-use project will make a dramatic difference to the city's skyline and community.
SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts have announced their plans to build a 360-room Residence Inn by Marriott on the former site of the Alberta Boot Company, at the corner of 10 Ave. and 5 St. S.W.
"We will spend over a three year period, a hundred million dollars in this community and the City of Calgary building out a beautiful hotel," said Steve Giblin, President and Chief Executive, SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts. "This hotel is going to be a brand new Marriot Residence Inn. It’s gonna be 360 rooms. And I’m proud to say that as of today this will not only be the biggest Residence Hotel in Canada, but one of the biggest in the world. So this is a world class facility."
"Calgary is a market that is growing, Calgary is a market that is underserved by hotels. And to have a tremendous extended stay hotel here on that incredibly special site, the Alberta Boot site, really anchoring the connection between the Beltine and downtown Calgary is a wonderful site. I’ve had my eye on that site for awhile and the folks at GWL know that I’ve been poking them saying it’s gonna be special right? Youre doing something good on that site right?" said Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi.
The hotel will feature:
- Full kitchens
- Separate living and sleeping areas
- In-hotel business services
- 24/7 self-serve food and beverage pantry
- Health and fitness options
- Comfortable public areas
- Terrace lounge
- Roof deck for relaxation and socializing
"We’re gonna invest a spectacular amount of money, over $100 million dollars, to make this the best hotel in the downtown urban core. These rooms will be beautiful," said Giblin.
In addition to a hotel, the site will also feature a 10,000 square foot conference centre which will offer a number of all-inclusive meeting packages.
The company says that the facilities will be distraction-free, ergonomically designed, and will offer high-definition video conferencing.
Construction is expected to begin in 2014 and the hotel is scheduled to open in 2016.
