Quarry Park recreation facility will open to the public later this year in the city’s southeast and a new sculpture is being installed outside the centre this week.

The piece is called ‘The Fold’ and is made out of self-weathering steel.

The concept was developed with families in mind and is a series of open rooms, which visitors are invited to sit on and explore.

Artist, Adad Hannah, is behind the project and was chosen by a panel in an open, international call for submissions.

“I wanted the sculpture to also be this kind of interactive hub where people can sit on it, stretch on it, eat lunch, play games, kids can run around, but it’s also a large visual piece as well,” said Hannah. ‘It’s kind of orange-brown and the way the colour varies and over time it’ll get deeper and deeper, kind of an eggplant colour, and I really like that because as it ages and as the community ages, they’ll get nicer.”

The city approved a budget of $450,000 for the project in 2013.

The Quarry Park recreation facility will open to the public on July 1. For more information click HERE.
