Calgary’s Chinese community is starting to gather support in opposition to a controversial bylaw which comes into effect in October.

Calgary’s Chinese Merchants Association held a public meeting meant to address concerns it had with the bylaw that bans the possession, sale, and consumption of shark fin.

The association claims that stakeholders weren’t consulted and questions the city’s transparency.

The city passed a motion, put forth by councilor Brian Pincott, last July to enact the bylaw.

A petition with 9,000 signatures in support of a ban was presented at that time.

Now, the Chinese community association wants to present a petition of its own.

Shark fin soup can range from $50 to $200 a bowl in restaurants in Calgary.

Toronto has already implemented a similar law.
