Provincial investigators have started looking into a police shooting that left one man dead.

Jonathan Rawlings was shot by police after leading officers on a pursuit through city streets.

Rawlings was no stranger to police.

He was arrested on a Canada-wide warrant and charged with 10 drug and weapons offences last September.

In April, Rawlings was picked up again and charged with theft over $5000, breach of recognizance, and driving while unauthorized.

The shooting occurred about 12:45 a.m. Thursday morning after police were led on a pursuit through north Calgary.

The two stolen trucks involved, were occupied by Rawlings, another man, and a woman.

The incident ended at a home on Whiteview Rd N.E., where Rawlings and the woman exited the truck and attempted to outrun the police on foot.

A ten-year veteran of the Calgary Police Service confronted Rawlings in the back yard of the home.

Police say Rawlings threatened the officer with a weapon which was later determined to be a screwdriver.

The police officer fired several shots and Rawlings was pronounced dead in hospital.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the shooting as is standard practice in all officer related shootings.

The Assistant Director for ASIRT, Roy Fitzpatrick, says they have confirmed that the officer who was confronted by Rawlings fired four shots.

Fitzpatrick also confirmed that Rawlings was hit by all four bullets and says they are still in the process of collecting all the information about what happened that night.

The investigation is spread over three different scenes.

One where the shooting occurred and two other locations where police disabled the trucks with spike belts.

Fitzpatrick says he can't say how long it will take to sift through all the evidence.

"Looking to explore every avenue that provided to us and ultimately at the end of the day find the truth of what occurred, so again speaking to everybody that what we want, we want to examine everything, and what to make sure that everything's that must be examined by experts is examined by experts."

Police have now laid charges against a second man.

Ryan Witvoet, 27, faces 18 charges in connection with the incident.

Police allege he evaded them and drove dangerously until he was stopped on University Dr. N.W.

Witvoet is charged with:

  • Dangerous driving
  • Flight from a peace officer
  • Possession of stolen property over $5,000
  • Possession of stolen property under $5,000
  • Possession of weapon dangerous to the public peace x 2
  • Breach of recognizance x 12

He will be in court on Monday, August 15 to answer to the charges.

ASIRT has been involved in a total of 12 investigations this year that involved the Calgary Police Service.

Six cases, including this latest one, are still under investigation.
