A woman is in hospital after she was allegedly attacked by a man with a sword at a residence in the Bragg Creek area on Friday morning.
Police were called to the home west of Calgary at about 12:45 a.m. by a woman who said she had been attacked by another person in the home.
The 79-year-old woman was taken to Foothills Hospital in serious condition and has since been upgraded to stable.
Police say she was attacked with a sword and Neighbours have identified her is Elaine Rath.
“We do know that the individual that we have arrested does have the ability and does make weapons, possibly as a hobby or even employment,” said Cpl. Troy Savinkoff from Cochrane RCMP. “It’s unusual and what happened last night is shocking and hearts go out to the victim. Her injuries are serious and will be long-lasting.”
A 19-year-old man was taken into custody from the scene without incident and police say he is a relative of the victim.
“Right now, the RCMP is comfortable in saying that it is a close family relative that also lives in the same residence,” said Savinkoff.
The suspect is in custody and police say he will face charges including aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
Police are working to determine a motive for the attack.
