Post-secondary institutions are struggling to deal with a major cut in funding in the wake of the province’s budget announcement earlier this month.
The province recently sent mandate letters to officials at schools around Alberta outlining ways to deal with inefficiencies in the system.
The University of Calgary is among those institutions that are trying to find ways to refine their budgets and prioritize spending.
The province cut 7 percent from the university's operating grant which is about $32 million less annually.
U of C President Elizabeth Cannon says a leaner budget may mean cutting low enrolment programs.
The U of C says that it had budgeted for a promised 2 percent increase in funding and that now the money will have to be found elsewhere.
Advanced education Minister Thomas Lukaszuk says the cuts are not negotiable and the 26 post-secondary institutions in the province will have to find ways to work together to reduce inefficiencies.
On March 20, the university announced freezes to 45 senior leadership salaries in response to the reduction in funding.
The university held a town hall meeting on Monday to gather input on funding cuts and has another planned for Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at MacEwan Hall.
