A small window of good weather allowed search and rescue teams to get into the Polar Circus area on Monday to look for a missing climber but so far he has not been located.

Sargeant Mark Salesse was conducting routine mountain training with his team in Polar Circus when he was swept away by an avalanche on Thursday at about 6:00 p.m.

Officials say the area was clear when climbing began and the conditions later deteriorated.

Parks Canada was contacted and initiated the search that evening but crews were unable to reach the route because of nightfall and dangerous weather conditions.

Salesse, 44, is from 435 Transport and Rescue Squadron based in Winnipeg and is an experienced SAR Technician.

Efforts to reach the area were halted over the weekend because of unrelenting snowfall and significant avalanche hazards.

Parks Canada is leading the search operation and officials say it is likely a recovery mission.

On Monday, four ground searchers and two dog teams were able to search the primary area but they were forced to leave after about two hours because of increased avalanche concerns.

They were not able to uncover any clues as to Salesse's whereabouts but say they will resume the search on Tuesday.
