With shovels held high, Calgary’s Snow Angels were honoured at a special ceremony recognizing their positive impact in the city, which can be especially appreciated this week.

Mayor Nenshi led the procession on Wednesday morning and says that now, more than ever, people are needed to join the program that enlists people who are ready and willing to shovel sidewalks and driveways after snowstorms.

The Calgary chapter was the first program of its kind in North America.

About 30 other cities in Canada and U.S. have Snow Angel programs.

“It’s really rewarding,” says Snow Angel Jim Bergen. “It makes me feel like I’m contributing. People can stay in their homes and if I can help them, like by shoveling snow, I’m just really happy to do that. It’s just part of me, that’s all.”

Calgarians can also share in the celebration by nominating a Snow Angel they know for a special recognition.

Just call 311, pass on your story, and that Snow Angel will be sent a special pin.

More than 6,000 people have been nominated in the organization’s history.

You can find out more about how you can be a Snow Angel by visiting the City of Calgary website.
