It has been a dry spring in High River so far and residents are hopeful that the river through town will stay within its banks.
Last June, the Highwood River spilled its banks and flooded the town and many people were left with a soggy mess to claim and clean up.
The town now has a new weapon to help protect against flooding. A detailed model of the community has been created that shows a worst-case flood scenario.
Reiley McKeeracher is the town's chief engineer and knows what is at stake.
“I was here in 1995 when it flooded in 95 and I remember driving my car, foot of water on the roads,” said McKeeracher.
The river’s path has changed since then and the model will help prevent floods and determine what limitation needs to be placed on development.
Town councillor Jamie Kinghorn is more than just a member of the flood committee.
“Historically I'm one of the first people to get water in my backyard,” said Kinghorn.
Kinghorn says the model is the first step to protecting the town and residents will get their first look at it on Thursday night.
