Three people accused of killing Ryan Lane and dumping his body in a rural area north of the city in 2012 have all pleaded not guilty in the case.

Sheena Rempel (Cuthill), 26, Wilhelm Klassen Rempel, 38, and Timothy Mark Rempel, 27, were all charged with first-degree murder back in 2012.

Sheena Rempel formerly had a relationship with the victim and had a child with him.

All three have now said they are not guilty in connection with the murder.

The Crown says that the three defendants plotted to kidnap and murder Lane for months in advance because of a custody battle over Sheena and Ryan's daughter.

The prosecution says that Wilhelm and Timothy lured Ryan to a parking lot where they kidnapped him, killed him and burned his body.

Lane's father and two of his friends are expected to testify during the trial.

Back in 2012, police said the group was at odds with Lane because of a custody battle over the former couple's young daughter, whom the victim hadn't seen in over two years.

Before his disappearance and murder, authorities say that Lane received an anonymously phone call from someone claiming they could help him with the custody dispute.

Lane, 24, was last seen in the early morning hours of Tuesday, February 7, 2012, near the 5200 block of Country Hills Boulevard N.W.

His remains weren't found until several months later during a search of a rural property near Beiseker.

The jury trial is expected to last six weeks.
