The two people accused of murdering a six-year-old Calgary girl in 2011 will learn their fate in June.
Justice Rosemary Nation, presiding over the trial, announced that she would have a verdict in early June for Spencer Jordan and Marie Magoon, accused of murdering Meika Jordan.
Jordan was Meika’s biological father, while Magoon was the girl’s stepmother. They have both been charged with first degree murder in the case.
During two days of final arguments in the trial, the court heard that Meika sustained fatal blows to her head and abdomen prior to her death at the Alberta Children’s Hospital in November 2011.
Crown lawyers say the pair intended to kill the girl, while the defence lawyers for both Jordan and Magoon are each trying to blame the other for the abuse.
Magoon’s lawyer Allan Fay wants the judge to acquit her of the murder, despite admitting that Magoon did abuse Meika by burning and spanking her, but the evidence doesn’t prove she caused the fatal injuries.
Jordan’s lawyer is pointing the finger at Magoon.
The verdict is expected on June 3.
