The Calgary Zoo has lost another animal and says that a female zebra was found dead in an outdoor area at the facility’s wildlife centre south of the city.
The Calgary Zoo once again made the announcement on its Facebook page.
The zebra, named Eleanor, came to the zoo with another Harmann mountain zebra just before the floods in mid-June.
Both were housed at the zoo’s Wildlife Conservation Centre for a mandatory quarantine period.
They were joined by the zoo’s two Grevy zebras when the flood waters hit and all four were being kept at the facility for the summer while crews work to restore the damaged habitats.
The zoo says Eleanor appeared to be fine throughout the day but was found dead in the pasture late Thursday afternoon.
A post-mortem exam was conducted and confirmed that Eleanor died from a twisted gut, a condition that often occurs in horses.
On a positive note, the zoo says its eight Humboldt and two Gentoo penguins are in stable condition after two other penguins died from a bacterial infection earlier this week.
