The Calgary Flames are holding an information session next week for season ticket holders and many are speculating that the meeting is to introduce details about a proposal for a new arena.

Flames season ticket holders were sent a letter from the organization saying that it will be hosting an information session to share a proposal for a project on August 18, 2015.

The letter is signed by Flames President and CEO, Ken King, and states in part…

“It is a great time to be a sports fan and live in this wonderful and vibrant city of Calgary. We would like to share a proposal for a project that will make all Calgarians and Albertans proud.

This has the potential to be one of Calgary’s most transformative projects at a vital time in our city’s history.

This will be our first public discussion on this project and it is important that you be among the first to know.”

The note explains that the information session is not a formal launch of the project but an introduction to the team’s vision for the future.

It does not say what exactly the project is but speculation about a new arena has been making the rounds for months and a computer animation depicting the interior was leaked last year.

A twitter account called @CalgaryNEXT was mentioned in the announcement and a tweet was posted to the account about the August 18 announcement.

CTV Calgary contacted Peter Hanlon from the Flames asking for more details on the project and he said nothing more would be provided until next Tuesday.

Calgary’s mayor has made it clear that tax dollars will not be used to build a new arena.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi was unavailable for comment on Wednesday but a spokesperson for his office confirmed that his position had not changed.

A few sites have been mentioned over the years as possible locations for a future arena including the West Village, but so far none have been confirmed.
