Interested parties were able to get their first look at a new outlet mall in development near the popular amusement area Calaway Park during a community meeting on Wednesday night.

The project, called Tanger Outlets at Calaway Park, calls for 350,000 square feet of retail space, 80 outlet stores, nine buildings, and parking lots to serve the area.

Developers say the mall will replace the campground at Calaway Park, and a portion of the parking lot.

None of the rides that have entertained families for generations will be affected.

The development is a joint project of real estate giants Rio-Can and Tanger Outlets.

Charles Worsham, with Tanger Factory Outlets, says the location near Calaway Park was very attractive to them. “With Calaway Park and the destination nature that it already is, the fact that the site is more or less zoned to accommodate outlet already – we feel that our destination nature coupled with Calaway will create a great opportunity here in the Springbank area.”

Bob Williams, the general manager of Calaway Park, says that the shopping mall will draw people to the area to shop, and then to the amusement park afterwards.

“What we’re wanting to bring to Calgary is the kind of unique outlet shopping experience we have in the States and some areas in Canada. It’s about 350,000 square feet with some of the greatest brands that everyone loves that we bring from the U.S. and Canada. What we’re offering is a pedestrian oriented, shopping experience that’s not here currently.”

The project will still need to go through Rockyview County Council and a series of public hearings.

The owners say they hope to break ground sometime next year.
