Calgary police shut down one lane in the 2100 block 17 Avenue Southwest following an underground explosion late Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency crews were called to the scene of a reported explosion near the former site of the Alberta Children’s Hospital.

According to police, several calls to 911 were placed shortly before 5:00 p.m. after a manhole cover was blown into the air near the intersection of 17 Avenue and 21 Street SW.

ENMAX says there was likely a build up in a power line and that caused the manhole cover to pop.

A number of people were without power in the neighbouring communities  of South Calgary, Scarboro, Richmond and Bankview but power was eventually restored.

ENMAX says 3,778 homes were without power and crews remained on scene into the evening to fix the problem.
