An Alberta man is dead after an avalanche near Golden, B.C. Friday afternoon.

The 50-year-old man was with a group of nine snowmobilers riding in the Lake of the Woods area near Silver Mines when the slide hit.

His identity has not yet been released by police.

Police say an emergency beacon was activated which provided a GPS location to rescuers.

The victim was found alongside his snowmobile buried underneath seven feet of snow.

He was dug out by his companions and rushed to Golden District hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Karl Klassen from the Canadian Avalanche Centre says this season the weak and firm layers of snow have made it difficult for snowmobilers and skiers to read the terrain properly.

"The key to managing risk in these conditions is not to depend heavily on the analysis of the terrain. You have to always consider: Could there be an avalanche, how big could it be, and then you have to ask yourself, do you really know enough to manage the risk properly?"

On Tuesday, two Edmonton-area snowmobilers died in an avalanche near McBride, B.C. Another snowmobiler was killed near Kimberley, B.C. on Wednesday.
