The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating an officer involved shooting that left one man dead.

Police say the man was armed with a screwdriver when he confronted officers on Thursday morning.

The whole incident began just before 11:00 p.m. when police spotted a stolen white truck driving erratically through several northeast communities.

The white truck eventually met up with another black truck.

The second truck was being driven by a male and there was a female in the passenger seat.

Police kept close tabs on both vehicles and eventually disabled the black truck with a spike belt.

The male and the female in the black truck jumped out, got into the white truck, and fled the scene.

Police continued their surveillance of the white truck as it proceeded to Whiteview Road N.E.

The male and female jumped out of the white truck and tried to flee from police.

An officer followed the male into a dark back yard in the community of Whitehorn.

The suspect then threatened the police officer with a screwdriver and the officer shot the man.

Police Chief Rick Hanson says the police officer, involved in the shooting, did what he was trained to do.

"He threatened the officer and approached him with an object in his hand that, at that point in time, I don't think the officer would go knife, screwdriver, whatever, he knew it was an edged weapon," said Hanson.

The male driver of the white truck drove off and was apprehended by police near University Drive in the northwest.

Police say the man tangled with a police dog before officers took him down with a rubber bullet.

CTV News has learned that the deceased man is Jonathan Rawlings.

ASIRT is investigating and will interview everyone involved in the incident.
