Search and Rescue crews in Sicamous have been unable to locate a man who went missing in Shuswap Lake during a houseboating trip on the weekend.

RCMP were called to the lake on Saturday at about 4:15 p.m. for reports of a possible drowning in the Narrows area.

Police say that a group of people were on a rented houseboat and some dove into the lake to retrieve a hat that had blown into the water.

They say rough water conditions caused the houseboat to drift away from those in the water and two people started having difficulties staying afloat.

Others in the water tried to help them out but one of the people slipped under the surface several times and did not resurface.

The rest made it back to the boat safely and called authorities.

Police have identified the missing man as 25-year-old Kevin Boutilier from Calgary.

They say he was wearing a pair of red shorts when he disappeared and that extensive searches on the water and from the air have failed to locate him.

Police say the water where Boutilier was last seen is very deep and the terrain on the bottom of the lake is challenging for divers and sonar equipment.

He is now classified as a missing person and is presumed drowned.
