Calgary Heritage in the city’s southwest was created when boundaries were redrawn in 2012 but the area has historically been strongly conservative. The region was part of Calgary Southwest, prior to reconfiguration, and had been represented by former Prime Minister Stephen Harper. He won 64 per cent of the vote in Calgary Heritage in 2015 but his party was defeated by the Liberals. Harper later retired as an MP in 2016. Roughly a year later, the Tories’ Bob Benzen won the seat in a by-election and is hoping to be re-elected come October 21st.
