A couple is recovering after they were brutally attacked by two dogs in a Didsbury home last week.

The attack happened at 10:00 p.m. last Tuesday night at a rural property outside the community.

The 27-year-old man and his 28-year-old female companion were attacked when they went in to feed the dogs for the owners who were out of town.

The dogs, a male and female Akita, were kept in the garage with their new litter of puppies.

The two dogs attacked the man, woman, and their Beagle biting them repeatedly.

The couple managed to fight their way out of the garage and attract the attention of some neighbours who dialed 911.

The bites and wounds the couple sustained are unimaginable.

The man's injuries were so severe he needed six hundred stitches to close the wounds.

The dogs are now on death row at Calgary Animal Services and are waiting to be euthanized.

At least one animal welfare group says the dogs aren't to blame and shouldn't pay the ultimate price.

"He was trying to protect his young and his mate and he felt threatened. I think first of all they should be separated and adopted out to separate homes and obviously spayed and neutered. And these people should be charged and never be able to breed again, as far as I'm concerned," said Heather Anderson.

The female dog will be destroyed once the puppies are weaned.
