An avalanche on Boulder Mountain has claimed the life of Chris McCoy, a 36-year-old resident of Sylvan Lake.

Kathy McCoy, Chris' wife, says her husband was an avid snowmobiler who knew the region's trails like the back of his hand.

At approximately 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Search and Rescue officials and RCMP members responded to the area following reports of an avalanche near the mountain’s snowmobile cabin. Prior to the slide, a group of four snowmobilers from Alberta, including Chris McCoy were travelling near the area. Chris was attempting to help a friend move a stuck snowmobile when the two were caught in the avalanche.

Rescue crews located the two men and removed them from the snow.  Chris McCoy was discovered unconscious and soon succumbed to his injuries.  The other snowmobiler sustained non-life threatening injuries. All four snowmobilers were travelling with avalanche beacons.

British Columbia’s Coroner Service is investigating McCoy's death.

Boulder Mountain was the scene of a deadly 2010 avalanche which claimed several snowmobilers.
