Members of the Calgary Police Service cordoned off a Monterey Park alleyway following afternoon gunshots that claimed one life.
According to police, officers responded to an alleyway in the 100 block of Del Ray Road Northeast shortly after 2:20 p.m.
Winston Khan's grandchildren were playing outside recording video with their iPad, when they came running back into his home. Khan said he watched the video with his grandchildren that captured audio of a bang followed by an unknown person saying 'What the hell is that?', followed by the sound of several more bangs.
Khan said he stayed inside his home until he noticed several police vehicles in his neighbourhood.
“I went to the backyard and I looked out in the back lane and I saw a body covered with a yellow tarp," said Khan. "Finally one officer came up and he said it’s a body.”
The identity of the deceased has not been released. An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted on Monday.
The CPS homicide unit is leading the investigation into the suspicious death which, according to police, does not appear to be random.
Police are reviewing surveillance video from several neighbourhood homes.
