Officials in High River are in the final stages of their preparation to remove an old rail bridge in the community to help mitigate flood risk.

The bridge was built in the early 1900s but was last used in 2010.

When the Highwood River flooded in June, debris piled up against the bridge and forced water into the town.

600 meteres of track leading to the bridge has already been removed, but now platforms will be built for the cranes that are necessary to remove the remaining structure.

The CPR bridge is more than 50 metres long and weighs over 500 tons.

Calgary-based Tervita, which has been working in High River since July 18, will be conducting the removal of the railway.

The removal of the bridge and subsequent scalping of the river should nearly double the flowing capacity of the Highwood River, officials say.
