The grieving continues for the five university students killed Tuesday. Thursday all flags at municipal buildings in Calgary were lowered.
Two makeshift memorials are growing at either end of the crime scene.
Friends and strangers are stopping by the Brentwood neighbourhood in northwest Calgary.
The steady stream of mourners are paying their final respect, and dropping off flowers, notes of condolence, and pausing to remember.
Jacqueline Rix says “it's just so hard to hear something like this hit so close to home. I thought I'd come pay my respects, and my heart goes out to all the families and even Matt's because I know they're going through such a struggle”.
Denise Van Lammeren also stopped by and says “'just wanted to pay respects, it's just very sad....I'm a mom I can only imagine what they are feeling”.
All five victims in Tuesday’s stabbing have been identified.
They are Josh Hunter, Zackariah Rathwell, Jordan Segura, Kaiti Perras and Lawrence Hong.
Thursday at noon there was a vigil at Mount Royal University in the Leacock Theatre.
Kaiti Perras and Jordan Segura both had attended MRU.
Wednesday, students, faculty, and friends attended a vigil at the Alberta College of Art and Design. Zachariah Rathwell was a student there.
Richard Brown, Chair of the School of Visual art says “we've experienced many losses under very tragic circumstances, but nothing like this".
Callum Beckford a friend of Rathwell’s says “at first I was shocked and confused, then sad and angry but I was more or less happy to have known him and been influenced by them”.
Tuesday, the day of the murders, the University of Calgary held a memorial.
Matthew de Grood is charged with five counts of first degree murder. He is scheduled to appear in Provincial Court April 22.
Thursday at a police news conference Kevin Brockwell confirmed that de Grood is now in the Calgary Remand Centre.
Brockwell said couldn't offer many more details, although he did say that the suspect was mingling with people at the house party before the stabbings happened.
