The Calgary Police Service is investigating an overnight death, considered suspicious, in a northeast building.

Police were called to the Valley Side aparment complex, located in the 300 block of 1 Avenue Northeast, at approximately 12:45 a.m. Sunday to check on the welfare of a resident. Officers located a deceased man in one of the units.

Police have not released the nature of the man’s death but have deemed the death suspicious.

Carol Murray, the building's manager, says the resident of the second floor suite, Frank Blomme, had lived in the building since 2014 as part of a Calgary Housing directive. Murray says she heard no noise emanating from Blomme's unit overnight but there had been a commotion in the lobby prior to the arrival of police.

"Just a bunch of people screaming," recalls Murray. "I came out and told them to shut the hell up."

A friend of Blomme's, who asked not to be identified to ensure her safety, says 'Uncle Frank' was a diabetic man in his late 50s or early 60s who would offer his place to anyone attempting to get their life together. "He gave people chances all the time."

The unnamed friend says Blomme's death was the result of a shooting. "Three guys came in and shot him with a shotgun. Didn't rob him, just shot him with a shotgun and left."

CPS members spent the better part of Sunday morning scouring the neighbourhood for evidence.

Anyone with information related to Frank Blomme's death is asked to contact the Calgary Police Service, 403-266-1234, or anonymous tips may be submitted through Crime Stoppers.
