The operators of the Glenbow Museum are contemplating a change of scenery.

Rising maintenance costs and a lack of space for exhibits are forcing the museum to reconsider its current location.

The museum, which has been a cultural focal point of downtown Calgary for the past 35 years, is home to tens of thousands of artifacts and documents covering the human history of the Canadian west.

It also houses more than 30,000 works of art, stored carefully in climate controlled environments.

The museum's curators are often forced to use temporary storage racks for hundreds of pieces of art which they don't have the space to showcase in the gallery.

According to Kristin Evenden, the CEO of the Glenbow Museum, there is much to consider before the museum can begin looking for a new location.

"Where do we go?" questions Evenden. "One of the first questions we have to ask is ‘What does the public want?'"

The Board of Governors for the museum hopes to establish a plan determining the Glenbow's space requirements by March of 2012.
