Lethbridge Polytechnic is taking steps to strengthen education and training opportunities for future police cadet graduates.

The post-secondary institution announced a new prior learning credit agreement with seven police services across Western Canada.

Those who graduated from a police cadet program as far back as 2017 can receive 42 credits toward a criminal justice policing diploma.

The hope is to expand officer education and foster new partnerships with law enforcement agencies across the Prairies to ensure the continued development of policing professionals.

"The thought process behind it, I think, is just this push to professionalizing policing and allowing our officers that are working out there to, if they so choose, pursue further education; take away some of those barriers for them," said Cate Rigaux with Lethbridge Polytechnic.

Lethbridge Polytechnic has also signed a unique memorandum of understanding with the Calgary Police Service.

Any officers who have passed the CPS training program will also be eligible for 36 credits toward the college's criminal justice policing diploma.
