Fire crews are investigating a gas leak near a strip mall in the 4100 block of 4 St. N.W.

Just after 11:00 a.m., firefighters responded to the scene after ATCO alerted the fire department to a damaged gas line in the neighbourhood.

According to CFD officials, approximately 50 people have been evacuated from the retail outlets and restaurants in the Highwood Plaza.

ATCO crews are working to clamp the line. Neighbouring homes and James Fowler High School have not been evacuated.

“No injuries have been reported and fire crews have evacuated just the strip mall, there’s no risk to the surrounding homes,” says Carol Henke,  Public Information Officer with the Calgary Fire Department.  “Power has been shut off to approximately six homes in the area and we are hoping that will be turned on again shortly.”

4 St. has been closed to traffic between 40 Ave. and 42 Ave. N.W. The gas leak prompted Calgary Transit to detour bus routes 2, 72 & 73.
