Parks Canada is using the Internet to keep people apprised of snow conditions in the mountains.

The site is called Mountain Safety and will be useful to those heading to the backcountry.

"We're trying to get more photos of terrain and avalanches on our daily avalanche bulletin so people can really get a sense of what it is we're talking about," says Brad White from Parks Canada.

White says the more people use the site, and share information, the more likely people will get home safely after a backcountry outing.

Wardens say the Canadian Avalanche Association website is still one of the best resources to find out about avalanche conditions in the mountain parks but the Mountain Safety website will deal with issues year round.

"So an example would be in the summer, someone is rock climbing and they have a very close call with a rock-fall incident. We're going to want to know about that so there's a function on the website called 'Near Miss Reporting' where you type in some details and a rescue leader gets that," says Aaron Beardmore who came up with the idea for the website.

The site launched about a month ago and its creators are now working to have alerts sent directly to mobile devices.
