One woman is dead and a second is in serious condition after a stabbing at a residence in the southeast community of Chaparral on Wednesday morning.

Police received several 911 calls at about 6:30 a.m. for reports of a violent incident in the street in the 100 block of Chaparral Valley Grove S.E.

When officers arrived they found two women suffering from stab wounds.

One woman was dead in the street and the other was critically injured and was rushed to hospital.

She has since been upgraded to serious but stable condition.

"The other woman is in stable condition,” said CPS S/Sgt Doug Andrus. “She has been interviewed and she provided a statement to police.”

The deceased woman has been identified by the Medical Examiner's Office as Carmel Leah Christians, 55, of Calgary.

Police say the incident happened outside the home and that they believe the friend was coming to the aid of the victim when she was also stabbed.

Police spent the morning going door-to-door to try and determine what happened and say the suspect fled the scene and has not been located despite search efforts.

James Allan Christians, 65, of Calgary is wanted on a warrant for second-degree murder, aggravated assault and possession of a weapon in connection to the incident.

Christians is described as:

  • Caucasian
  • 175 cm or 5'9" tall
  • About 113 Kg or 250 lbs.
  • Salt and pepper hair
  • Blue eyes

Police say Christians is associated to a 2013, medium-grey, GMC pickup truck with Alberta plate JRA 305.

Investigators say the accused is the victim's estranged husband and that a previous dealing with the pair resulted in an order of protection being put in place.

“Police responded to a complaint on September 2, 2013, and based on information provided to police, Mr. Christians was charged with two counts of assault and threats. At that time an emergency protection order was put in place,” said S/Sgt Andrus.

Police say Carmel Christians was living with a friend at a home in Chaparral.

“Yes, she had been living with a friend of hers at that residence and had been doing so just after this incident in September,” said Andrus.

Andrus says there is a possibility that the charges could be upgraded once more details are known.

Police say Christians is a threat to himself and others and anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call 911 immediately.
