Prominent Calgary businessman Rob Laidlaw passes away after cancer diagnosis

Longtime Calgary businessman Rob Laidlaw passed away at his home Sunday morning at the age of 64.

A social media post shared by Laidlaw's family Monday afternoon revealed he had been diagnosed with small cell carcinoma on Jan. 1.

"Rob had been golfing in Arizona as recently as a month ago. He was admitted to the Foothills hospital on (Dec. 19) shortly after flying home. We only learned (of) a diagnosis of small cell carcinoma on New Year's Day. Even a week ago, we never could have imagined that we would lose him so soon," the Facebook post says.

According to Acumen Capital Partners' website, Laidlaw's career in investment banking spanned more than four decades.

He spent 25 of those years with the firm as its director and vice-president.

The company acknowledged Laidlaw's passing in a statement describing him as a mentor and leader who inspired those around him.

The online tribute also touched on the businessman's accomplishments outside the office and his zest for life.

"We will miss Rob dearly—from his quick jokes or 'Howdy Partner,' to his infectious smile and laughter, and how he brought people together. He was an immense personality and had a great love for his family, his team at Acumen, and the Calgary Stampede, being recognized as an Honorary Life Director with the Calgary Stampede. His years of tireless volunteerism have left a huge mark on the city of Calgary."

Laidlaw volunteered with the Calgary Stampede for decades, served on its board of directors for 10 years and was later appointed as an Honorary Life Director.

Among the more notable philanthropic efforts was Laidlaw's annual summer charitable event, The Best Damn Stampede Party, which drew thousands of Calgarians each year in support of the Children's Hospital Aid Society.

News of Laidlaw's death has prompted an outpouring of condolences and tributes from friends, acquaintances and business peers, leaving the Calgarian's family deeply touched.

"It has frankly been overwhelming to see the news of his passing be shared so broadly while we are still dealing with the shock that he is gone. Rob would be touched by the many happy memories from those he loved," the Facebook post says.

The family says details for a celebration of life for the well-known and admired Calgarian will be released in the coming days.

"We are planning a celebration fitting for someone who lived his life to the fullest and was loved by so many."
