The potential for heavy rain in parts of southern Alberta over the long weekend has prompted officials in High River to put out a rainfall advisory for the area.

The forecast for the weekend is calling for significant rainfall in the Alberta foothills which could create a high streamflow in the Highwood River and its tributaries.

A low pressure system from B.C. will roll into the area on Saturday afternoon and stick around for the weekend bringing between 25 and 40 mm of rain by Monday night.

Officials in High River say that 30 mm of rain would increase the flow rate in the Highwood by 126 cubic metres/second and that those situated close to the river should be cautious of rising water levels.

Some residents could also see issues with high groundwater and are being advised to ensure sump pump systems are working properly and that downspouts and eaves troughs are functioning.

Town officials say residents should also consider moving valuables and important documents in basements to higher locations and also register for High River ALERTs on the Town’s website.

People are being asked to stay off the rivers and away from the banks for their personal safety.

The Town says it will continue to monitor the situation closely through the weekend and will provide updates on its twitter account and on Facebook.
