A date to open the extension of Stoney Trail in southeast Calgary is yet to be set as more delays continue to plague the project.

The Stoney Trail extension from 17 Ave. to Macleod Trail S.E. was supposed to open on October 1.

Transportation Minister Ric McIver says paving, line painting, guardrail, sign installation, and a safety audit will need to be done before the road can open.

“You don't need to look very hard at the road to look like it's almost done,” he says. “Nonetheless, we can't let them open until it's complete according to the contract and it's demonstrated to be safe through the mechanisms that are detailed in the contract.”

Every day the road isn’t open, the contractor in charge of building is fined $70,000.

That bill has already surpassed $1M.
