The newest section of Stoney Trail, expected to open on Tuesday morning, will be delayed.
The $769M section of highways is delayed for a few weeks because the contractor has failed to complete a safety audit.
The southeast portion of Stoney Trail runs from 17 Ave. S.E. to Highway 22X, and then west all the way to Macleod Trail.
A spokesman for Transportation Minister Ric McIver says there will be more information on the delay on Monday.
The contractor could face fines of up to $70,000 per day, for every day that the highway is delayed.
The contractor still has another year to complete numerous landscaping and fence building projects which are not expected to impact traffic.
McIver said on Monday morning that he hopes the fine will be enough incentive for the contractor to get the work done.
"The contract, in its current form, wasn't designed to allow for extra days. The contract was designed as a fixed price so the price won't go up and a fixed delivery date and a fixed product. The contract hasn't changed, we don't intend to breach it, we don't expect the contracter will breach it. We are working with them and cheering for them to get it done."
On October 24, the Tsuu T’ina First Nation is expected to vote on an agreement that was tentatively struck between band leaders and McIver to complete the southwest section of the road.
McIver says that unfortunate wording of the original agreement prompted members to reject the deal back in 2009.
Both Mayor Naheed Nenshi and Premier Alison Redford are happy with the progress on the deal to complete the southwest section.
The southeast section is now tentatively scheduled to open in mid-October.
