A throng of supporters stood outside the Calgary Court Centre on Monday, all there to fight for justice in the murder of six-year-old Meika Jordan.
Meika was brought to the Alberta Children’s Hospital on November 13, 2011, suffering from critical injuries from which she died a day later.
Since then, Spencer Lee Jordan and Marie Eve Magoon, Meika's biological father and stepmother, have been charged with first degree murder in Meika’s death.
They claimed the girl fell down the stairs on the night she was brought to hospital, but the Crown alleges that was not the case.
Prosecuting lawyers say Meika had been covered in way too many bruises to explain away a tumble down the stairs.
The Crown says that the girl was victim to a long period of torture; she had her hands burned, head smashed against the floor, and was also punched numerous times.
Meika’s biological mother and stepfather are grateful for the support they received outside the Court Centre before they went in to attend the proceedings.
Brian Woodhouse says they wanted to bring as many people as they could to show the city how much Meika was loved. “This little angel was loved by many, many people and we will not rest until we’ve received justice for Meika.”
Kyla Woodhouse says it’s been very difficult being without her daughter. “It’s been extremely hard without her, to have to wake up every day and go on with your life without having that little piece of you is hard to deal with. It’s hard enough to bury any loved one, let alone a child.”
The trial is expected to last several days.
If convicted, Jordan and Magoon could each face a life sentence with no chance for parole for 25 years.
