A local man and his girlfriend faced a Calgary judge for the first time on Tuesday charged in the murder of the man’s six-year-old daughter.

Spencer Lee Jordan, 26, and Marie Eve Magoon, 22, are charged with one count each of second-degree murder in connection with the death of Meika Dawn Jordan last year.

Police were called to a residence in the 6700 block of Temple Dr. N.E. on the evening of November 13, 2011 for a report of a child injured in her home.

Officers were originally told that the little girl had fallen down the stairs. Meika was taken to hospital but succumbed to her injuries the next day.

An autopsy confirmed that the girl died as a result of multiple blunt force trauma. Police say they believe she also suffered a third-degree burn to her hand and fingers before her death.

Investigators say that she was in the sole care of her father and his girlfriend at the time of her injuries.

Spencer Jordan and Marie Magoon were arrested on Sunday without incident and charged with second-degree murder.

The pair appeared briefly in court on Tuesday via CCTV to request council.

Meika’s mother and stepdad were among those at the hearing demanding justice for the little girl.

Kyla Guttman and Brian Woodhouse say it was a difficult day but they felt it was important to attend court to ensure justice is served.

“Very difficult still, at this point, I mean it is closure on one hand, but on the other hand they're still not officially behind bars for any amount of time right now. I think once that final day comes will be the best thing for everybody,” said Guttman.

“It opens up some fresh wounds, obviously things that are never going to go away but very justifying to see them in those prison jumpsuits,” said Woodhouse.

Spencer Jordan’s father, Ken says he is numb but he has to support his son.

“He’s my son, yes. From a father I have to support my son,” said Ken Jordan. “They both have been suspects from day one. They have been the only suspects from day one. There’ve been no other suspects.”

Ken Jordan says he believes his son is innocent and that he doesn’t know how it happened.

The case has been put over until October 26th and Jordan and Magoon will remain in custody at the Calgary Remand Centre.
