The selective forensic demolition of a southwest community arena is expected to take several weeks as investigators attempt to determine what caused the roof to collapse.
On February 20, the roof of Fairview Arena caved-in. No one was in the building at the time as the building had been ordered closed due to potential safety concerns.
According to City of Calgary officials, the two main occupants of the building have been temporarily relocated while the future of the arena is determined. The Fairview Women’s Hockey Arena Society will utilize the ice at Frank McCool Arena beginning in April and the Indefinite Arts Society has set up shop at the Shanes Homes YMCA in Rocky Ridge.
“The City wants to ensure that both organizations are able to continue to provide Calgarians with opportunities to provide Calgarians with opportunities to participate in their programs without undue interruption,” said James Mclaughlin, manager of capital development with Calgary Recreation. “So we are happy to assist with temporary accommodation.”
The collapse at Fairview Arena prompted the City to inspect all City of Calgary arenas on the week of February 26, 2018.
