The cauldron on the top of the Calgary Tower will be ignited each day a gold medal is won by a Canadian athlete to commemorate the XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.
The torch will burn from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. when a Canadian athlete or team wins gold during the Games.
“This is our way of celebrating and congratulating Canadian athletes on their successes in the 2014 Olympics,” says Aspen Properties Chairman and CEO, R. Scott Hutcheson. “As Calgarians, we continue to benefit from the facilities that were built for the ’88 Olympics,” says Hutcheson. “The cauldron is no doubt one of the most unique and visible legacies of those games.”
The cauldron burned 24 hours a day throughout the 16 days of the ’88 Olympics in Calgary and was lit at exactly the same time as the official flame at McMahon Stadium
The cauldron was a gift from sponsor Canadian Western Natural Gas, now ATCO.
