The Calgary Fire Department is sounding the alarm after two rafters needed to be rescued from the Harvie Passage.

Two experienced rafters ran into trouble along the Bow River on Thursday afternoon.

The brothers found that the rapids in Harvie Passage were too high and fast flowing. They were equipped with life jackets and helmets, but the water still proved to be too much.

Robert and Dean Nikolic say they want other rafters to be aware of the dangers.

"It was really scary we tried to get over it the best we could and our boat got stuck and taking on water we had no choice but to bail out and we got stuck on the rocks which was a bit embarrassing the firefighters had to come get us I don't recommend this to people," said Robert.

"It was a pretty terrifying ordeal the water is really high and deceivingly fast you don't see how bad it is until you are in the water," said Dean.

In just the last year the Calgary Fire Department has responded to 89 rescue calls at Harvie Passage.

With warmer weather and the Canada Day long weekend coming up, they want people to be aware of the dangers.

Rafters should consider getting out of the Bow River and walking around the area if they are not very experienced with rapids.
