Police are still looking for a suspect in connection with a fatal shooting in southeast Calgary on Monday morning, but say that the victim was specifically targeted.
Police have identified him as Kyle Rowe, 26, of Calgary.
At about 10:50 a.m. on October 31, police were called to the 100 block of Riverbend Drive S.E. for reports of a shooting.
When they got there, they found a man in his 20s lying in the front of a parked BMW SUV. He was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS a short time later.
Inspector Don Coleman with the CPS Major Crimes Section says they won’t have many more details on the case until some investigative work is done.
“We’re hoping in the next 24 to 48 hours to have a better idea what’s occurred once witnesses are interviewed, neighbourhood inquiries are completed, CCTV canvassing has been completed, things like that, we’ll have a better idea of what we are dealing with.”
However, Coleman says they believe the shooting was a targeted attack.
“There’s some earmarks of, some similarities between other homicides we’ve had but it’s still too early to really determine what exactly occurred or what the motivation might have been,” said Coleman. “There is some incidents that we’re currently exploring to see if they may or may not be related that have occurred in that area but once we get that pieced together we’ll have a better idea.”
CTV spoke with the owner of the home where the shooting took place and says the victim was friends with his daughter. When the incident took place, he was very concerned that his daughter was the one who was shot.
“I was walking down the stairs, getting ready to go to work and that’s when I heard a shot. I came to the front door there and opened the curtain and I saw the gunman run away.”
He says that once he saw the other vehicle leave, he came out to check on the situation.
“I realized that my daughter had just walked out a few seconds before and then I heard the gunshot. I thought, ‘Is that my daughter?’ that’s why I opened the garage door and I saw my daughter right there and I thought she was safe.”
The homeowner did know the victim in the shooting, but didn’t know that he was into any sort of activity that could have led to such a situation.
As for other residents in the community, they were shocked to see the shooting take place in their safe neighbourhood.
Police say a dark minivan or SUV was seen speeding away from the scene, but they don’t have any leads on a suspect or a motive in the shooting.
An autopsy on the victim is expected to be completed sometime on Tuesday.
