Airdrie RCMP says that a 14-year-old boy from the community has been charged with setting a fire inside Genesis Place in January.

Crews were called to the recreation centre on January 23 for reports of a fire inside a recycling bin inside the building.

The blaze was put out, but the damage from the fire was estimated at approximately $29,000.

Officials later determined that the fire was deliberately set, prompting RCMP to begin an investigation.

On March 16, a youth from Airdrie was arrested and charged with arson in connection with the fire.

Police credit the facility’s security cameras with leading them to the arrest.

“Having access to high quality video surveillance was a big help in solving this crime,” said Cst. Dan Martin, Airdrie RCMP Media Relations Officer in a release. “Great video evidence allowed members to quickly identify the people that needed to be interviewed for this file.”

The youth cannot be named under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
