A 12-year-old boy is in serious condition on Friday after he was hit by a van while he was crossing the street on his bike in northeast Calgary.

At about 6:30 p.m, police say the boy, who was not wearing a helmet, was riding his bike in the area of Westwinds Drive and Castleridge Drive N.E.

He crossed the road against a red light and was hit by a driver.

EMS took the boy to hospital in life-threatening condition.

The driver of the van remained at the scene and spoke with police.

“From the information we have, the 12-year-old boy was crossing against the light, so he would have been crossing with a ‘don’t walk’ sign for pedestrians,” said Sergeant Jon James with the CPS Traffic Unit. “The van that was traveling southbound was crossing on a fresh green light and had the right of way.”

Investigators say that the sun didn’t affect the driver’s ability to see the road and traffic signals were all working properly.

Police remind cyclists to always wear a helmet.
