A 26-year-old Calgary man has been found guilty of flying a drone near the airport earlier this year and on Wednesday was handed a fine for the offence.

In January, police saw a man flying a drone in a public park near 26 Avenue and 16 Street N.E. and the UAV was seen flying under the flight path of an airport runway.

Syed Gohar Haider Shah was charged with one count of interfering with a navigation facility to endanger the safety of aircraft.

It is an offence to fly a UAV within five nautical miles of the airport and police say it was the first time a charge of this nature was laid in Calgary.
