A two-year member of the Calgary Police Service is facing weapons charges in connection to the alleged purchase of a shotgun without possessing the appropriate licence.

Law enforcement officials were notified about the incident in August of this year and say that they also received information that the shotgun was allegedly not stored properly inside the purchaser’s home.

Police say that the firearm was legally held by its previous owner.

An investigation was launched and the Crown determined that charges were warranted.

The 26-year-old officer has been charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm and contravention of storage regulations and is currently on administrative leave.

Police say the investigation originated from a domestic matter and that they are not releasing names to protect the welfare of the family involved.

Officials say that the officer’s status will be reviewed and that they released details of the charges to ensure transparency to the public.
