Two people were taken to hospital after the driver of a vehicle lost control and hit a number of trees and mailboxes in the Whitehorn area on Monday night.

Police were called to Whitefield Drive near Whitefield Place N.E. at about 6:30 p.m. for reports of a crash.

Investigators say the driver of a Mercedes lost control and crashed into numerous trees and mailboxes on the side of the road.

The passenger of the car had to be cut out by firefighters and the male driver was taken into custody by police a short distance away, after fleeing the scene.

Both occupants of the vehicle were taken to hospital in non-life threatening condition.
