Over a dozen people were forced to flee their homes after a fire broken out at a home in the northeast early Tuesday morning.
Calgary fire crews were called out just after 1:00 a.m. to a house fire on Castlebury Court N.E.
When crews arrived, they found two homes fully involved and called in a second alarm to help them knock down the blaze.
Ten people managed to escape from the two homes that were on fire. Two people were injured as a result.
A man in his mid-30s was sent to hospital for treatment and a child was treated at the scene.
Seven people in two neighbouring homes were removed from their homes as a precaution.
All the evacuees were sheltered in Calgary Transit buses while firefighters worked on the fire.
Alternate arrangements have already been made for the families that have lost their homes.
Fire officials are investigating the cause and say a battery charger and batteries were removed from the home as part of the investigation.
A father and his two sons were upstairs in the home, and their tenants were downstairs.
The father tried to put out the fire, but it apparently spread quickly, engulfing the home where it started and then spreading to the neighbour's home.
Jason Major, the brother of the homeowner said he smothered the fire and put water on it. "They thought they had it out, then he opened a window and boom, when he turned around it was just inflamed."
There is no word yet on a damage estimate but fire officials say the two homes sustained extensive damage.
