A 20-year-old man who suffered a gunshot wound during a police takedown faces charges in connection with a suspected intentional hit-and-run.

On Tuesday afternoon, officers responded to the intersection of Dermot Baldwin Way and 4 Avenue Southeast after an SUV struck a cyclist.

While CPS members investigated the hit-and-run, the suspect vehicle returned to the scene and the driver allegedly attempted to strike the officers with the SUV.

A CPS member fired his weapon at the suspect, wounding the man. The SUV stopped a short distance away on Riverfront Avenue.

The cyclist suffered serious injuries in the collision.

The driver of the SUV, 20-year-old Einar James Bearhat of Calgary, has been charged with:

  • Attempted murder
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Possession of stolen property

CPS Inspector Steve Barlow confirms Bearhat is known to police.

Police arrested a woman following the hit-and-run but she was released without charges. Officers continue to search for a third potential suspect who fled the scene.

Investigators believe the SUV was involved in a number of violent incidents that occurred on Tuesday. Police continue to investigate.

ASIRT continues to investigate the actions of the CPS member who fired at Bearhat.
