The death of a man in May from an apparent overdose has now been deemed a homicide and Calgary police are trying to determine the victim's movements before his murder.

Police were called to a home in the 0-100 block of Martindale Drive NE at about 6:15 a.m. on May 30, 2014.

Sardar Atiq Khan, 41, was found dead inside his home and the death was originally deemed an overdose.

Police say Khan was living in the home with his two children and wife and that she was the one to discover him.

They are now trying to piece together Khan's whereabouts in the days leading up to his death.

"We treated this as a suspicious death from the onset in the investigation and we ensured that we conducted a complete and thorough forensic examination of the residence during the early stages of the investigation," said Staff Sergeant Doug Andrus with the Calgary Police Service. "We've been working in consultation with the Medical Examiner's Office and we continue to get preliminary results back from the tests that were conducted at the time of the autopsy and the forensic examination that was done on the house."

Andrus says the results of those first tests helped to determine the death was murder. "We also had a number of investigative steps that had to be done in order to determine this as a homicide."

Police will not comment on the cause of death but did confirm that there was evidence of drug use in the home.

"We don't believe this was a random incident. We believe the persons involved knew the victim or the victim's family. There was no signs of forced entry and no signs of struggle in the residence," said Andrus. "We want to speak with anybody who may have come in contact with him in the week prior to his death."

Police say Khan was last seen during the late evening hours the night before he was found dead.
